AEROBIC EXERCISE REDUCES PAINS OF FIBROMYALGIA
Reduce the pain of Fibromyalgia by following a regular exercise program, researchers suggest following the conclusions of a recent study.
One percent of the population suffer with the severe muscle and joint pain associated with Fibromyalgia, most of which are women.
Pain medication, anti-inflammatory and prescription drugs have failed at improving the condition.
The new study, published in the British Medical Journal, found patients who exercised regularly reported substantial improvements in the way they felt.
Researchers compared the effects of a simple-to-follow, community based exercise program on 132 people with Fibromyalgia. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. One group received exercise therapy from a personal trainer (who had not been specially trained to work with Fibromyalgia patients.) The other group received relaxation and muscle flexibility training. Each group met for one hour classes for three months.
At the end of the 12 weeks, researchers found that 35% of the patients who participated in the individualized exercise program, which consisted of walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bicycle, reported feeling “much better” — only 50% of the relaxation group reported similar improvements.
After a one-year follow-up, only 31 patients in the exercise group still met the criteria for having Fibromyalgia, whereas 44 people in the relaxation group were still considered to have the condition. The exercise group also reported bigger reductions in muscle and joint tenderness, and reported that Fibromyalgia was having less of a negative effect on their lives.
According to author of the study, Selwyn C.M. Richards of Poole Hospital in Dorset, England, the results of this study show that, “Prescribed aerobic activity is a simple, cheap and potentially widely available treatment for Fibromyalgia.”
Hope to see everyone tomorrow night in the office @ 7:30pm.
