Hope everyone is have a FANTASTIC week. Here is some useful tips and information when faced with those itchy critters this summer.
A NON-TOXIC APPROACH TO REPELLING INSECTS
As summer is here and the mosquitoes find there way to your backyard, make sure you have taken some preventative measures to keep them away from your outdoor festivities.
Mosquitoes transmit pathogenic organisms that cause disease and death to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. They tend to be most attracted to dark clothing, carbon dioxide and sweat and feed late dusk and early evening.
When mosquitoes bite, a chemical agent in their saliva, which keeps blood from clotting, enters your bloodstream. If bitten by a large number of mosquitoes, some domestic animals can die from the blood loss and anaphylactic shock; humans are at risk of getting malaria, yellow fever, dengue, and many other diseases which are transmitted by mosquito bites.
Before you reach for the insect repellents and other synthetic pesticides, Alternative Medicineoffers the following suggestions:
- Get rid of stagnant or standing water to eliminate mosquitoes.
- Use mesh screens on windows and doors; caulk and maintain weather stripping to keep mosquitoes out.
- Use non-attracting lights, such as yellow light or sodium vapor lamps, at outside entrances.
- Prepare your own repellent to spray (puree six garlic cloves and hot peppers with two cups of water in a blender; stain and add a few drops of liquid soap.)
- Repel mosquitoes by applying Noxema, citronella oil or scented geraniums on clothing and exposed areas or burn citronella candles. Apply vinegar or soybean oil to skin.
- To relieve bites, soak in Epsom salt water; mix salt with cold cream; or a slice of raw potato to neutralize the reaction.
